Replicate installation Server

I have recently started to become familar with the Install sever. All going well so far.

My roadblock however is this...

I have managed to replicate Server A, so now have Server A and B. On different boxes, and both with the same packages etc.

I have created a new package on Server A and was hoping the new package would be available on Server B.

Is there any config i need to do to have the two server become aware of each other. So i can create a new package on Server A and then be pushed down to Server B?

Any advice would be greatfuly received.

Hi there,

we want to use SAP GUI 730 and the environment variable SAPLOGON_INI_FILE that points to our common saplogon.ini stored on a server.

Is it possible in this case to set a path, by registry value or something else, to a locally stored SapLogonTree.xml?

Hello,

Is it possible to be notified when a user clicks on a SAP Tree Control and expands a sub menu? I would like to capture the name of the sub menu item and any associated properties. Can you please provide a code snippet? I am using c# . I have checked the GuiSession object's focus changed event, but it does not raise any event when a user clicks on any Tree Control.

Thanks!

Announcing SAP Screen Personas update: Service Pack 1 (SP1)

$

0

On behalf of the SAP Screen Personas development and product management team, I am happy to announce the availability of SAP Screen Personas 1.1, also known by its official name, SAP Screen Personas RCS 1.0 SP1.

The theme of this release is enterprise readiness. We have listened to the feedback from some of our early customers and extended the functionality to make it easier for them to deploy Personas in large enterprise environments.

Enhancements include improvements in the following areas:

System Administration

System-wide settings allow you to define themes and properties on all transactions, even if you do not personalize them.

We also made it easier to manage users and groups along with the flavors they can access. This capability is now linked to the SAP group settings.

Language Support

Version 1.0 ran in English and German.

We have added support for (in alphabetical order) Chinese, French, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish.

In addition, it is easier to translate flavors. You can export all your personalized labels, translate them, and, create a new flavor in a new language.

Ease-of-Use

Since we designed SAP Screen Personas to improve usability of SAP GUI screens, we are constantly looking for ways to make Personas as easy as possible to use. Our customers have made several suggestions, which we have integrated into the product. Some notable items include:

Cut and paste information from/to SAP screens (Ctrl-Y / Ctrl-C feature)

Numbering in scripts

Commenting in scripts

Transparency as a color

Simpler ways to make fancy buttons

Easier dialog boxes

Image preview before uploading

NWBC Integration

We have made it easier to use SAP Screen Personas with NWBC.

Accessibility

Personas now supports JAWS and other text readers.

Bug Fixes

Bugs happen. We fixed them. This is always part of Service Packs.

You can read the full details in SAP Note 1845927.

Next Steps

If you are already a Personas customer (thank you!), you can download SAP Screen Personas 1.0 Service Pack 1 from Service Marketplace.

If you are considering buying Personas to improve the usability of your SAP GUI screens, now is a great time to talk to your SAP account executive.

Thoughts on SAP Screen Personas after event in London

$
0
0

I was fortunate to attend an SAP Screen Personas Customer Event in London on April 24, 2013 run by theSAP Imagineering team. This was part of my investigations into how we might improve the experience for many of our SAP users. I was expecting a demo of the capabilities of the software and the opportunity for some hands-on time to investigate its capabilities for myself. I got both of those and more besides. This blog is a quick summary of the content from the day that was important to me. For more information, including FAQs, how-tos and video demos, look at the SAP Community Network Wiki - SAP Imagineering - SAPScreenPersonas wiki.

The first few sessions of the day addressed not just Personas but UX issues more generally, and gave lots of good advice about how to approach a UX improvement project. A few interesting things from those sessions:

  • UI design is a design skill and not a technical skill. If you are embarking on a UX improvement project, make sure you have design skills on the team. This is no different from using PowerPoint, where you can do lots of clever things very easily with no real technical skill required, but you can just as easily create awful PowerPoint slides as nice ones. This certainly resonates with me. I'm not short of technical skills, but my design skills are almost non-existent! My PowerPoint slide decks are almost universally bad
  • Don't focus just on the casual users. When you do surveys of user happiness with SAP, the casual users are generally less happy than professional users. If you use SAP through SAPgui day in, day out, not only do you get used to it, but you appreciate the power the comes from the UI complexity. If you use it once a week, you will always struggle to remember how a transaction works. It is tempting, therefore, to focus UX improvement effort on casual users, but that is usually a mistake. Not only are the overall productivity gains higher when you improve things for professional users, but if you neglect them the professional users feel neglected and end up less happy as a result! Casual users should probably be your first target, but don't forget the heavy users also.
  • Speaking of productivity gains, while that's an obvious thing to measure when looking at the success of a UX project, it isn't the only thing, and maybe even not the most important thing. Think carefully about how you are going to measure the success of a UX improvement project.
  • You should have a long-term strategy for UX improvement, and not just a one-off project to improve the obvious few transaction and leave it at that.

So, to Personas itself. We were given a demo of the current version of Personas, version 1. We saw how to turn the standard SAP login screen (transaction SMEN) into something like a launchpad for users that need to use just a few transactions. We also saw how to take an existing transaction such as VA01 and greatly simplify it by removing unnecessary fields and tabs, and by merging content from multiple tabs into a single one. Alongside this there's functionality for changing the visual appearance with different colours, backgrounds, images, etc. so that you can end up with a screen that looks nothing like the original starting point, and even nothing like SAP if that's important to your users! There's also a scripting capability allowing you to perform multiple actions with a single button click, including chaining transactions together. The wiki mentioned above has links to examples of all of this.

One thing that concerned me about Personas was its longevity. From what I knew of it technically, it could easily have been a product that would be around for 2 or 3 years to address a specific requirement and then quietly fade away. Investing in such a thing obviously isn't very appealing. After hearing about the plans for future versions, those concerns have largely gone away. The current version, version 1, has an architecture like this:

screenshot.png

In essence it takes the output of the ITS webgui as its input. It allows you to modify that, and then renders the result in the client web browser via silverlight. It feels very much like an afterthought, an independent layer that could go away as quickly as it arrived, and that's what prompted my concerns over its longevity. A consequence of this is that version 1 of Personas does not affect the layout of screens in traditional SAPgui or the webgui. It is, in effect, a third gui. Note also that the Personas functionality exists almost entirely in a stand-alone ABAP add-on, although it does require a small amount of kernel functionality that exists only in the 7.21 kernel.

With subsequent versions, two major changes are happening. First, silverlight is being phased out as the presentation layer in favour of HTML5. Secondly, the screen re-writing functionality is being moved from the browser into the NetWeaver kernel. An interesting consequence of that is that it will then be able to re-write webgui and SAPgui screens! This moving of functionality into the kernel is what persuades me that this is a long-term product. This is a big change for the kernel and I don't believe it would be made for a product with a short expected lifetime. Both of these changes will be available at the latest in version 3, which is due for release in time for Sapphire 2014, but some may make it into version 2, expected late this year.

I haven't mentioned the administration functionality for all of this. Tailored screens are knows as "flavours" "flavors" and you can control which users have access to which flavors, which flavors a user gets as a default for a given transaction, who can create their own, etc. We only got the briefest of demos of this aspect but what I saw seemed pretty comprehensive.

Overall, the event was a great introduction to what seems like a great product. I left with my head full of ideas for how I could use it back in the office. Now I just need to arrange to get access to it...

Hello,

I am using SAP Gui Scripting for automating some user scenarios. Is it possible to be notified when a user clicks on a tree control and selects or expands a node? Can the GuiSession object's, FocusChanged event help? I would like to capture the name of the submenu and any other associated properties.

Thanks!

Hello

I get the following message in the SAP Admin Install Server logs when trying to install a package on any client PC on my network:

"MakeUserLocalAdmin: Failed to lookup group account. Error message: The RPC server is unavailable. Error code 0x000006ba (1722)."

I have followed the guide to configure the server correctly, so what could be causing this error?

Cheers,

James

Universal Clients for Accessing SAP Systems

SAP GUI is SAP's universal client for accessing SAP functionality in SAP applications such as - SAP ERP, SAP Business Suite (SAP CRM, SAP SCM and SAP PLM), SAP Business Intelligence and so on. SAP GUI functions like a browser. It gets information from the SAP server like what, where, when and how, to display contents in its window. All members of the SAP GUI family have unique attributes that make them especially suited for different user environments. SAP GUI comes in the following three different flavors:

SAP GUI for Windows
SAP GUI for Windows is an implementation especially designed for the Windows operating system, providing a Windows-like user experience and integration with other applications, based on OLE interfaces or ActiveX controls.

SAP GUI for the Java Environment

SAP GUI for the Java environment is a unified SAP frontend for multiple platforms. It is based on a platform-independent architecture and Java implementation. As a major benefit, it provides access to SAP applications that are based on Control-Enabling and therefore used to be reserved for Windows users in the past. Please, note that SAP GUI for Java is also available on Windows.

SAP GUI for HTML

SAP GUI for HTML automatically maps the screen elements in SAP transactions to HTML using HTML Business functions available within the SAP Internet Transaction Server. A web browser is sufficient to access almost all transactions. Please note: Since SAP GUI for HTML is an application running on the ITS, you find corresponding information on the ITS page.
You can find detailed information on the different SAP GUI types under the following links:

Installation

SAP GUI for Windows

This documentation describes how to install and distribute the SAP front-end software on Windows with the SAP Setup front-end deployment and software management solution. The benefits of using SAP Setup are that you can insert new SAP front-end components on to an existing installation server and deploy multiple components. In addition, SAP Setup offers new diagnostic and check tools for better support. The key processes are wizard-driven and you have new and powerful command-line parameters. Also, it is possible to trigger an unattended automatic workstation update.
This document provides an overview and further information about the frontend installation and distribution tool SAP Setup.

SAP GUI for Java

This archive contains among others the SAP GUI for Java installation information.

SAP GUI for HTML/ITS

SAP@Web Installation Guide (ITS 6.20)
SAP GUI for HTML is running on the ITS, therefore the ITS installation information is relevant in this case. Since the ITS is integrated in SAP NW as of Release 2004, you do not need to install SAP GUI for HTML/ITS separately on systems as of this release. It comes with  the package. For the non-integrated, standalone ITS, you find installation information in the SAP@Web Installation Guide for ITS 6.20 which describes how to install the standalone SAP Internet Transaction Server (ITS 6.20) and related tools on released Windows and Linux platforms.

Platform Support and Maintenance Strategy

I've created a package (pak1) on an SAP GUI installation server. The package started to fail and I later deleted it. This package (pak1) was installed on over a hundred client machines. I later recreated the package (pak1) with the same name but the client machines will not automatically update from this new package after it was updated. Is there some way to get these machines to recognize and update from this new package without having to re-run the new package (pak1) on all the clients?

SAP Screen Personas - How to render flavors in Netweaver Business Client (NWBC)

$
0
0

SAP Screen Personas only requires Silverlight 5 and a supported browser on a client computer. No installation of the SAP GUI or of the Netweaver Business Client (NWBC) is required. However, if you are already using NWBC and you would like to use Personas in the canvas area of NWBC then you can do this using the short link feature.

To show how it works we create a short demo video showing how you can create a so called short link that points to Personas that automatically connects to a specified system, transaction and flavor. This link or to be precise the link id is then used to create a menu entry in role using the transaction PFCG.

Step-by-step:

  1. Start with the index page in NWBC 4.0 of a prepared role
    1. Existing menu contains links to PFCG, the Personas admin transaction and an entry opening Personas in fullscreen mode with editing enabled
  2. Jump into PFCG to show how the Personas link is configured in a role that is assigned to the demo user
    1. BSP application
    2. Start page: nwbc.html (Personas runs in fullscreen mode and frameless)
    3. Parameter: frameless = false (adds the edit/flavor bar to fullscreen mode for editing)
  3. Jump into the tab with Personas open
    1. Open transaction SU01
    2. Show how the flavor "NWBC Quick View" works
  4. Switch back to the index page and open the Personas admin transaction
  5. Create a short link
    1. Open General Action -> Shortlink Maintenance
    2. Enter short link details
      1. Transaction code: SU01
      2. System: B9F (the system used for this demo)
      3. Flavor: NWBC Quick View
    3. Click on "Get Shortlink"
      1. The generated link could be used to open Personas for the given transaction, flavor and system in any browser
    4. Copy the value of the link parameter in the short link
  6. Switch back to PFCG and add a new entry
    1. Add a folder named "User Maintenance"
    2. Add a "BSP Application"
      1. Use same values as shown in the other Personas menu entry
      2. Add parameter "link" with the value that has been copied from the short link
    3. Save the role
  7. Switch back to the index page
    1. Refresh the page by pressing the CTRL button and opening Help -> Extended Supportability -> Clean-up -> Reload Navigation tree from server
    2. Click on the new entry called User Management -> Quick View
